This new year is flying by faster than 2022 ever did, which makes us reminisce about the travel highlights of the past year. Here were some of the top destinations in 2022 – will you visit any in 2023?
1. Reykjavik, Iceland
The capital city of Iceland is the gorgeous city of Reykjavik. With a population of about 131,000 people, this city has been rated as one the safest and greenest cities in the world. One of the cooler destinations in terms of temperature, Reykjavik averages about 40 degrees fahrenheit year round, which is perfect weather for going on a day hike through Mount Esja. Other points of interest include the National Museum of Iceland, the Sun Voyager steel boat sculpture, and the Hallgrimskirkja cathedral. If you're lucky, you may be able to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights!
2. Honolulu, Hawaii
Another beautiful and highly desirable destination to visit is Hawaii, particularly Honolulu. Home to iconic Hawaiian luau's and the tasty Mai Tai drink, Honolulu is beloved by travelers for its year-round tropical climate, spectacular surfing destinations, and fairytale-like scenery. You can soak up the sun on the expansive Waikiki Beach, hike to the dormant Diamond Head volacno, and hula dance the night away at a luau!
3. Prague, Czech Republic
Prague is the quaint capital city of Czech Republic. Known for its Gothic architecture and baroque buildings, Prague has been dubbed “the City of a Hundred Spires” to its vast number of cathedrals, all of which have several point spires atop the buildings. While visiting, you can enjoy many of the city’s major landmarks such as the Prague Castle, the iconic Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, and the uniquely designed Dancing House.
4. The Maldives
Located in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is the true definition of paradise. With a small population of approximately 541,000 people, the Maldives is a quiet archipelago of islands that operates in its own bubble of serenity. The country is surrounded by beautiful white sand beaches and crystal clear waters ideal for snorkeling, surfing, and other water sports. Places of interest include Meeru Island, Vilamendhoo, Milaidhoo, and Male Atoll.
5. Osaka, Japan
As the third most populous city in Japan and 10th largest urban area in the world, Osaka serves as one of the most culturally and economically diverse cities in all of Japan. Similar to the metropolis of Tokyo, Osaka is filled with many things to see and do. Home to one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Japan, Shitenno-ji, the city hosts a number of other popular landmarks such as the Osaka Castle and the Osaka Aquarium. Did we mention that the city is also famous for its local eateries and lively nightlife?
6. Monteverde, Costa Rica
More of a nature trip than anything, Monteverde is a perfect place to realign your chakras and become one with the outdoors. The city, which directly translates to Green Mountain, is a wondrous place filled with a combination of cloud and rainforests. The area also hosts a number of unique animals including the famed quetzal, muskrats, and porcupines. Visitors can also venture through Curi-Cancha Reserve, Selvatura Adventure, and the Monteverde Butterfly Gardens.
7. San Pedro, Belize
A Caribbean wonder, San Pedro, Belize is another great pick if you’re looking for a tropical getaway. Located in the Northern tip of the country, the city is filled with several beach bars and seafood restaurants. Also a nature reserve, San Pedro is a perfect spot for snorkelers due to its proximity to an offshore reef. You can find a bunch of cool marine animals in these pristine waters of the Caribbean such as parrotfish, moray eels, nurse sharks, and even stingrays. Other places of interest include the Belize Chocolate Company, the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, and the Gallery of San Pedro.
8. Galapagos Islands
The Ecuadorian islands have been on top of travelers’ bucket lists for quite some time. Nestled right on the Equator, this archipelago contains many islands that are full of natural beauty and unique wildlife. Even though many of the islands are volcanic, it remains home to roughly 25,000 people. While visiting, you may spot a Galapagos sea lion on San Cristobal Island or even marine iguana hanging out by Darwin’s Arch.
9. Casablanca, Morocco
Located at the Northwest corner of Africa is the beautiful country of Morocco. Within this gorgeous country is the historic and picturesque city of Casablanca. Known for its Moorish style and European influenced architecture, this coastal city is definitely worth the trip. Travelers can spend time exploring the Royal Palace and the Sacred Heart Cathedral, or soak up the sun at Plage Lalla Meryem, a local beach.
