Hallgrimskirkja

The Hallgrimskirkja is one of the most intriguing attractions in Reykjavik simply due to its unique structure. Recognized as a Lutheran Church of Ireland, this building stands as one of the tallest in the country and boasts a distinctive curved spire shape.

Designed by architect Guojon Samuelsson, the Hallgrimskirkja is said to be modeled after Iceland’s beautiful landscape which features glaciers, jagged rock formations, and mountains. Visitors can enjoy service at the church or simply climb to its observation deck which offers amazing views of Reykjavik.

Sun Voyager

Another architecturally stunning attraction in Reykjavik is the Sun Voyager. Located on the Northwestern side of the city, this striking sculpture was created in 1990 by artist Jon Gunnar Arnason. While many misunderstood what the landmark represented (a Viking ship), the landmark is actually a symbol of Iceland’s freedom and progress.

Locals recommend visiting the sculpture to take pictures during a sunset due to its placement with Mount Esja looming in the background.

Northern Lights

Although visible in many other regions of the Northern Hemisphere, Iceland is by far one of the best places to see the Northern Lights. This beautiful natural light display is the result of the Earth’s strong magnetosphere colliding with solar winds which cause a disturbance in the air’s charged particles. These charged particles then emit various beams of light that range from a reddish orange color to a bright green with hints of purple.

Visitors should definitely add seeing the Northern Lights onto their Iceland bucket list – especially during September to mid-April.

Golden Circle

For those interested in exploring scenic routes, the Golden Circle is one of the best things to do in Reykjavik. This fascinating route in Iceland takes tourists from Reykjavik through a 190-mile loop through the Southern regions of Iceland.

During the ride, you’ll have a chance to experience a few of Iceland’s top natural attractions including Pingvellir National Park, the Gullfoss Waterfall, and the geothermal area of Haukadalur – which is home to the two popular geysers (Geysir and Strokkur). If you’re lucky, you may be able to catch a glimpse of Strokkur’s eruption which occurs every 10 to 15 minutes.

Perlan Museum

If you're a history buff, be sure to visit the Perlan Museum! First opened in 1991, this natural history museum is located atop Oskjuhlio Hill in the center of the city and is home to various exhibits.

Some highlights of the museum include an ice cave, a glacier, a 10 meter high replica of Europe’s biggest seabird, a 360 observation deck, and a planetarium that features an artificial Northern Lights show, among other things.

Visit Kringlan Mall

The Kringlan Mall is one of the top attractions in Reykjavik and holds the title as the largest mall in the city with over 170 stores. Located in the city center, the mall is easily accessible via public transit and nearby a few other landmarks including the Hallgrimskirkja.

The shopping center has three stories of restaurants, cafes, and retail stores that range from affordable to luxury. Perfect for those craving a little retail therapy, the Kringlan Mall also offers family-friendly activities including a full movie theater, the Reykjavik City Library, and the Adventure Land children's play area.

Whale Watching

Since Iceland’s capital city is near the coast, it’s no surprise that whale watching is one of the best things to do in Reykjavik. With tons of companies offering different tours, there are a plethora of options to enjoy this experience.

Along with whales, you might also see some other marine animals including dolphins, porpoises, minkes, and even puffin birds! Most tours are guided and offer narrations that are provided by licensed marine biologists – so you’ll never be left in the dark about what you’re spectating.
